জেনারেল সায়ীদের বক্তব্যের পর মঞ্চ থেকে মুকুন্দপুর যুদ্ধে অংশ নেওয়া বেঁচে থাকা বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা নেমে আসছিলেন। তাদের সঙ্গে নামছিলেন সায়রাও। মিডিয়াকর্মীরা দৌড়ে গেলেন তার সঙ্গে কথা বলতে।
নানা প্রশ্নের মাঝে সবার কমন প্রশ্ন ছিল- `একজন রাজাকারের মেয়ে হয়েও কীভাবে আপনি এতটা দুঃসাহসী কাজ করার সাহস পেলেন?`
সায়রার উত্তর মেশানো প্রশ্ন, ‘এটা আমার দেশ না? আমি আমার দেশের জন্য কাজ করেছি।’
‘আপনার বাবা রাজাকার ছিলেন। তারপরও...’ সায়রা সাফ জানিয়ে দেন, ‘তার কাজ তিনি করেছেন। আমি আমার কাজ করেছি।’
জানা গেল, সায়রার বাবা রাজাকার আজিজ মারা গেছেন বেশ ক`বছর আগে।
তবে আসল যে কথাটা শুনে আমিসহ অন্যরা চমকে গেলাম, তা হলো যুদ্ধের পর নিজ এলাকায় থাকাটাই অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়েছিল তার জন্য। কেন?
কারণ, লোকমুখে ছড়ানো বদনাম।সায়রা মুখ ফুটে কিছু না বললেও বোঝা গেল কী কারণে তাকে নিজ এলাকা বিজয়নগর ছেড়ে সিলেট চলে যেতে হয়েছিল।
কথায় কথায় সায়রা বললেন, `৩৫ বছর পর এলাকায় ফিরতে পেরেছি। এখনও লোকজন বাজে কথা বলে।`
রাজাকারের মেয়ে হয়েও হানাদার পাকিদের বিষয়ে তথ্য দিতে মুক্তিযোদ্ধা ক্যাম্পে যোগাযোগ রাখার খেসারত তাকে দিতে হয়েছে প্রশংসার বলে বদনামের ভাগীদার হয়ে। যেখানে প্রশংসা পাওয়ার কথা সেখানে হতে হয়েছে নিন্দিত।
বছর ছয়েক আগে মুকুন্দপুরে ফিরে এসে বাড়ি করেছেন। তার স্বামীর নাম শহীদুল্লাহ।
জানতে চাইলাম, ‘শহীদুল্লাহ সাহেব বেঁচে আছেন?’ সায়রা হ্যাঁ সূচক মাথা নেড়ে বলেন, ‘জি।’
জানা গেল, এখানে এসে তার বিষয়ে ছড়ানো বদনামগুলো জানার পর স্বামীর সঙ্গে ভুল বোঝাবুঝির সৃষ্টি হয়। পরে অবশ্য স্বাভাবিক হয়। আমি একথা জানার পর এই অসাধারণ মানুষটির প্রতি শ্রদ্ধাবনত সালাম জানালাম মনে মনে। জানি না, জনাব শহীদুল্লাহ এ লেখা পড়বেন কী না।কিন্তু তিনি আমাদের এই অসম সাহসী বীর বোনটিকে গ্রহণ করেছেন, এজন্য জাতির পক্ষ থেকে কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাচ্ছি।
এসময় পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা মুক্তিযোদ্ধা কমান্ডার লাল মিয়া বললেন, যুদ্ধের সময় সায়রার পুরো ভূমিকা ছিল সম্পূর্ণ আমাদের পক্ষে।
সায়রা মুক্তিযোদ্ধার পরিচিতি এখনো পাননি। তিন বছর যাবত কাগজপত্র জমা দিয়ে অপেক্ষা করছেন। কিন্তু কোনো খবর নেই। একমাত্র মেয়ে সাবিনা ইয়াসমীনের জন্য একটা চাকরি তার প্রার্থনা। আমাকে বলেলন, `ভাই আমার মেয়ের একটা চাকরির ব্যবস্থা যদি আপনে করে দেন!`
সবকিছু শুনে আর বাস্তবতার বিচারে যা জানি তাতে একবার মনে হল সায়রাকে কষে বকা লাগাই- `তোকে (তিনি বয়সে আমার অগ্রজ) কে বলেছিল এসব করতে? তার চেয়ে ভালো হত যদি বাবার অনুগত থাকতি।অন্তত এখন সে পরিচয়ে প্রতিষ্ঠিত রাজাকারদের কাছে গেলে সব ধরনের সাহায্য না হলেও অন্তত মেয়ের জন্য একটি চাকরির ব্যবস্থা নিশ্চিত হত- কোনো ব্যাংকে অথবা হাসপাতালে।`
কিন্তু কী বলবো। অসম্ভব আবেগ আর হৃদয় মন উজাড় করা ভালোবাসার এই দেশে অদ্ভূত কিছু বিষয় ধাঁধাঁর মত লাগে।এখানে পুরস্কারের বদলে প্রায়ই নসিবে ছিন্ন পাদুকা।সৎকার্যের প্রতিদান তিরষ্কার!
আহ, সায়রা যদি অন্য কোনও দেশে জম্মাতেন আর সেখানকার মুক্তিযুদ্ধে অমন ভূমিকা রাখতেন!লাতিন আমেরকায় হলে তাকে নিয়ে ক্ল্যাসিক সাহিত্য রচিত হত, ইউরোপে হলে হয়ত তাকে নিয়ে সৃষ্টি হত অমর কোনও শিল্পকর্ম আর আমেরিকানরা কমপক্ষে একটি হলিউডি মুভি তো বানাতো।
আর আমরা করছি সবচেয়ে সহজ কাজটি...অপবাদ

সায়রা বেগমের প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক শিক্ষা না থাকলেও তার বিবেক জাগ্রত ছিল। যেকারণে পিতা রাজাকার হবার পরেও এই নারী পিতাকে সমর্থন না করে মুক্তিযুদ্ধে যোগদান করেন। আমাদের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে অনন্য দৃষ্টান্ত স্থাপনকারী সায়রা বেগমের জন্য অপরিসীম শ্রদ্ধা।
অপারেশন মুকুন্দপুর ছিল একাত্তরে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের পরিচালিত সফল অপারেশনের একটি। সেদিন ভারতীয় সেনাবাহিনীর ১৮ রাজপুত ব্যাটালিয়নের সহযোগীতায় আমাদের মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা দখল করে নেয় পাকিস্তানীদের সুরক্ষিত ঘাঁটি ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়ার বিজয়নগর উপজেলার মুকুন্দপুর। সেদিনের মুকুন্দপুর যুদ্ধে অংশ নেওয়া মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা কিছুদিন আগে আয়োজন করেছিলেন এক পুনর্মিলনীর।
সেখানে বেরিয়ে আসে আমাদের মুক্তিযোদ্ধা মা সায়রার কথা। অদ্ভুত ব্যাপার হল তার পিতা রাজাকার হওয়া সত্ত্বেও একাত্তরে সায়রা বেগম দেশের টানে নিজের জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মত দুঃসাহসিক এক কাজে জড়িয়ে পরেন যা হার মানায় যেকোন গল্প,উপন্যাসের কাহিনীকেও। অথচ এই বীরাঙ্গনা মাকেই আমরা দিতে পারিনি তার যোগ্য সম্মান,দিয়েছি অপবাদের কথা।
